James Robertson, a factory worker from Detroit, has been walking more than 20 miles to and from work five days a week for several years. The arduous commute is a result of cutbacks to the bus system between his home in Detroit to his work in Rochester Hills.
Robertson garnered attention when the Detroit Free Press published a piece about him on Sunday. The 56-year-old said he enjoys walking and being outside, but knows that he can’t sustain the daily trek forever.
After reading the story, one student from Wayne State University launched an Internet crowd-funding site that has already collected more than $280,000.
19-year-old Evan Leedy says his initial goal was to raise $5,000 to help fund a new car, but when people learned about Robertson’s incredible work ethic — he has maintained a perfect attendance record at work — there was an outpouring of support.
Robertson had a chance to thank Leedy in person when the two met face-to-face on Monday, saying “I will never forget this.”
